Floating Rings Science Set with Platform

This educational system uses repulsion between like magnetic poles to suspend a vertical stack of ring magnets along a guide rod. A clear tube and tray can be assembled above the floating rings to create a magnetic spring scale in which added load compresses the spacing between the magnets. The system allows students to observe magnetic levitation, force equilibrium, force versus distance, calibration, mass measurement, and the nonlinear behavior of a magnetic spring.

Product Specifications

Magnets6 black ceramic ring magnets
BaseWooden base with a pre-drilled center hole
GuideWooden dowel
Platform ComponentsClear plastic test tube with cap and clear plastic petri dish used as the weighing tray
Additional Materials RequiredCraft stick, colored paper or thin card, clear tape, double-sided tape, hot glue gun and glue sticks, white glue or wood glue, 30 identical coins, scissors, fine-tip marker, and ruler with millimeter marks; not included

Applications and Benefits:

  • Demonstrates magnetic poles, magnetic repulsion, and magnetic levitation
  • Demonstrates equilibrium between gravitational force and magnetic force
  • Shows how a guide rod maintains alignment between repelling ring magnets
  • Allows investigation of how magnetic repulsive force changes with distance
  • Demonstrates magnetic spring behavior and spring-scale operation
  • Allows calibration of the tray displacement using identical coins or known masses
  • Allows measurement of small objects after calibration
  • Supports investigation of why equal increases in mass produce progressively smaller displacement as the magnets move closer together
  • Supports science fair, technology, display, and engineering projects
  • Supports hypothesis testing, repeated measurement, averaging, data analysis, and evaluation of experimental error
  • Supports graphing mass versus displacement and comparison with linear spring behavior

Caution:

Ceramic magnets are brittle and can chip or crack if allowed to snap together; broken chips may be sharp. Keep magnets away from phones, computers, credit cards, sensitive electronic devices, and people with pacemakers or other medical implants. Never place magnets or coins in the mouth. When the floating rings are compressed and released quickly, the upper ring can jump off the dowel; keep the face away from the top of the dowel. Avoid touching the hot-glue-gun tip or hot glue. Adult supervision is required when using a hot glue gun. Kit contents may differ in appearance from images shown.
